Day 3 of my #100daysofemdash, which you can follow if you’re REALLY INTERESTED on Instagram and Twitter (please follow me, I have so few friends on these accounts it makes me feel socially inadequate to only get likes from commercial companies and SEO consultants).
Today was a composition study of Jonny Hannah’s Mermaid Cafe. So, I started with a straightforward copy but started having Paul Klee déjà vu, recognising some Klee style techniques. I particularly had in mind Flagged Pavillion (1927).
So, started again trying to Kleeify the Mermaid Cafe, but also thinking about Hannah’s use of typography. Klee also used dense typography, one of the most famous being Once Emerged From the Grey of Night (1918), a piece I had studied several months ago for a colour-theory fooling-around session.
Also experienced a crisis of confidence in this project this morning because I’ve been looking at lots of other people’s 100Days projects and of course they’re way more accomplished than I am, and I was thinking oh, god I’m doing this wrong. As if it matters, duh, because hardly anyone is looking at what I’m doing, so just breathe and draw the damn pictures.
